SAUSALITO (2000) SF film locations pt.6

Back to San Francisco for more SAUSALITO film locations. Above Maggie Cheung hangs out with her bratty son as she works on her wall mural in the SOMA district. Ok, so, Mags plays a cabbie in the film, has a beautiful home in Noe Valley, AND gets to deface private property with her so called 'art'? I'm in the wrong freakin' business. I guess being a SF cabbie is where it's at? The location where Mags 'creates' her crap 'art' is located on 6th street, just south of Howard St., west side.

After a night of imbibing Shirley Temples at the BackFlip Bar (took pics of that location as well, though the establishment is long gone), Leon Lai takes a tinkle on Maggies mural. I thought Leon squatted when he did his business? Maggie looks on from her cab and takes note for future reference.
Ok. Present day shot of where my Maggies mural was located, intersection of 6th St. and Howard St. Her mural is not there anymore but the building on which she pitched her paints is still adorned with graffiti-like artwork.

Above, Maggies son works her shoulders as a creepy scenario plays out on the streets of San Francisco. This view is northbound on 6th looking beyond Howard St.

The same shot as above, present day, looking northbound on 6th. Comparing the two pics you can see that the background has changed rather drastically as palm trees have been added to the sidewalk and a multi storied art-deco like building takes the place of the former dual-level establishment seen rising above Maggies incestuous shoulder rub from the film.
After seeing Leon sprinkle while taking his tinkle, Maggie commemorates the spot where he defaced her creation with his urine by adding a wee weeing puppy. Awwww. Love is in the air. The pungent asparagus smelling urine air.

And finally, a closeup of the location where Mags mural was, southbound on 6th, west side of the street. A ways down, laying on the sidewalk, an indigent gentleman, a San Francisco sidewalk staple, is accosted by two patrolmen.

SAUSALITO (2000) SF film locations pt.5

After a long ass day of hoofing it around San Francisco, Wei went back to the hotel to rest up before we had to head back out and on over to AT&T Park for the Giants/A's game. I wanted to rest up as well, as we had been out walking and sightseeing all day, but I pressed on. With blog homework on my mind, I Tiger Balmed my aching knees and calves and pounded some more pavement to find more SAUSALITO filming locales. I was a tourist for sure, fumbling with about three different maps as I trekked through the SOMA neighborhood. Showing disregard for life and limb, I paid no attention to traffic signals, rarely looking both ways as I crossed streets. I got lost a time or two and had to double back a few blocks here and there, but was able to make it to a few different locations. This locale, as seen in the accompanying pics, is in the SOMA neighborhood on Natoma Street, between 10th and 11th streets.






It's red colored garage door with yellow painted sun burst make this loft stick out like a sore thumb amongst the rest of the industrial gray colored homes on Natoma. In the film, this location makes for Leon Lai Ming's workspace. The actual interior is shown in the film and it's beautiful and spacious. These exterior shots from the movie have been taken after Maggie (shown above) spends the night at Leon's joint and does the walk of shame through the Farmer's Market, before returning with some food and sundries for her new boy toy's love shack.








Above you can see Maggie after she returns with her groceries. After an awkward encounter with Richard Ng (shown on the right), she continues past the apartment, and walks towards 11th street. Below you'll see the garage door sun damaged and worn. A darker shade of paint possibly covering rust or graffiti?






This locale was my final SAUSALITO spot to hit before I moved on to a rather bland THE WESLEY'S MYSTERIOUS FILE location. So, I was kinda excited to hit it and quit it. At this point in my warm and sunny late afternoon journey, I was roasting. Swamp ass was settling in and I had sweat all of the Tiger Balm from legs. I hurried down Natoma, approaching from 10th street. As I got closer to the building, I checked my camera for the correct setting and began to point and shoot as I walked. I noticed an Asian man getting out of his car across from the building. He made toward the front of the home and noticed me taking pics. He stopped and stood for a while, scoping me out. I stopped taking pics and went back to my map, pretending like a 10 year old that I wasn't doing anything? What? Who me? Taking pictures? Pshaw!






I walked past the house on the opposite side of the street, nose in map, heading toward 11th street. I turned around to see if this dude was still checking me out and there he stood. Giving me the stink eye! I made it to 11th street, still pretending to be lost and delirious, turning around every now and again to check on the Asian dude with the stink eye. Finally, he left the area. I made my way back down Natoma, this time on the same side of the street as Leon's workspace, walking by the same spaces once occupied by Maggie and Richard, snapping some closeups of the door, and then skedaddled my swampy butt out of there before stink eye guy came around again.

After the Natoma street incident, like I mentioned earlier, I walked over to a crappy THE WESLEY'S MYSTERIOUS FILE locale, and then high tailed back to the hotel to shower, talcum my bottom and get ready for the Giant's game. The game was excellent. It's difficult to beat free field level seats, garlic fries, a few beers, and a Giants win. Below is the view from our seats as you can see 'The Freak',Tim Lincecum, mid-delivery of a nasty fastball. The beautiful SF twilight lights the scene.

Back at the hotel around midnight, I whipped out the Tiger Balm and did sort of an all over thing. That menthol burn never felt so good.

SAUSALITO (2000) SF film locations pt.4

The next film I'll be giving the US/HK film location treatment to is Andrew Lau Wai-keung's 2000 romantic comedy, SAUSALITO, starring my lover Maggie Cheung Man-yuk, Leon Lai Ming, Eric Kot Man-fai, Richard Ng Yiu-hon, and Suki Kwan Sau-mei. I have quite a few pics of a bunch of locations I visited on my last trip to SF so I will be breaking them up as I get a bit pissy when my posts are toooooo long. I don't like reading long posts so i'm trying to make a conscious effort to keep my posts a reasonable length.

The back of Maggie Cheung Man-yuk's noggin' (insert dirty joke about me seeing the back of Mags noggin')can be seen in the above pic as she looks out upon a picturesque hillside in the city of Sausalito. In the film, not much time is spent in this gorgeous area just north of The Golden Gate Bridge, but it is where Maggie's character dreams to settle down. Below is a pic of the same hillside full of homes that Maggie is peering out over. This pic was taken on my first trip to SF, back in the spring of 2008.

The next pic is an obvious one to spot, even in the pre-dawn hours as pictured above. The scene: after a night of drinking, Maggie and Leon have just done the deed in the back of her cab. As the sun rises, we see Maggie's cab parked at the Fort Point National Historic site. Wei and I visited the area while on the San Francisco Movie Tour, this past spring. The tour comes highly recommended and it was a lot of fun. Incidentally, Fort Point was also used in the Alfred Hitchcock film, Vertigo. If you look at the below pic (because it's brighter) you can see Fort Point on the left hand side of the picture, below The Golden Gate Bridge. In Vertigo, Kim Novak takes a header into the water and Jimmy Stewart jumps in and saves her. That scene was filmed here. Just one of the film nuggets provided by the San Francisco Movie Tour.

The next two pics are of the San Francisco City Hall and the Heart of the City Farmers Market. After Maggie and Leon meet for another tryst, this time at his work space (pictures coming), Mags does the walk of shame through the Farmers Market. Above is a nice shot of City Hall in the distance and below we see the back of Maggie, again, as she tramps through the market.


Below is a two for one shot as you can surely make out City Hall in the background as I stand in the Farmers Market and snap the pic. You can see, there appear to be more vendors at the market now than ten years ago. Also check out the spherical lights that run the length of the market on both sides in the pic below. They are more appealing than the box-like fixtures from the above pic from 2000. Another film nugget from the San Francisco Movie Tour, a sequence from the Francis Ford Coppola film, TUCKER: THE MAN AND HIS DREAM, was filmed outside of City Hall. Good stuff!

I chose this series of pics to post first as more of an introduction to the SAUSALITO film locations. They are the more noticeable spots in the film. Some of the other locations are a tad more obscure.
