Hong Kong VHS Mess

 POSSESSED (1994), QUENCHLESS DESIRE (1993)
-
POSSESSED is a 1994 film starring Ken Tong Jan-yip.  I have the film as a DVD-r and if I remember correctly, the databases mislabel it as a CAT II.  Which was a lovely surprise when I watched it!  I have also seen QUENCHLESS DESIRE and have it as a DVD-r as well.  Don't remember a damn thing about it, though.
-
Ok.  So most of you readers know my situation.  'Broke' and having a heck of a time looking for a place to live before I get married in a few months.  Money is precious, more than ever before, and needs to be horded away.  I can't afford to spend money in the coming months and have Ms. Mail Lady pay me her usual visits.  This coming X-mas is figuring to be lean but exactly 2 months away from Santa's visit, it's beginning to look a lot like X-mas past around here.   I'm running the risk of interrogation by Wei if she were to see this post and believe that this is a brand spankin' new batch of movies.  Luckily, she rarely visits the blog these days.  But just in case she does.....Hi babe.  These aren't new movies.  I've been diligently saving my money like a good little boy.  =)  So, with that preface, I will let you decide if this is a new batch of VHS from Ms. Mail Lady.  *cough* *wink* *smiley tongue out winky face*

FORBIDDEN LOVE (1993) , THE TANGLES LOVE (1992)
-
I have seen FORBIDDEN LOVE before, once again as a DVD-r, and once again, I remember nada.  THE TANGLES LOVE I was lucky enough to find during my big laser disc haul.  So this copy is just icing on an an awesome CAT III cake.

 HONG KONG VALENTINO (1993) , PROSTITUTE (1992)
-
I have HONG KONG VALENTINO on laser disc.  It is a trifle thin but so are most CAT III sex romps.  And that's not a bad thing.  When Lee Chung-ling is in the cast, it's worthy of a once over.  PROSTITUTE is a fairly fun CAT III comedy from 1992 directed by Lam Yee-hung.  A director no stranger to filming boobies, gosh love him.  PROSTITUTE stars one of my faves, Cindy Yip Sin-yi, and she gives us what we want.  A fine performance, of course.  And check out the great cover art.  I am just so enamored with Tai Seng cover art from the early to mid 90's.  Always so brightly colorful and inviting.  As well they should be.  Upon seeing the cover of  PROSTITUTE I had flashbacks to my virgin HK cinema days and discovering a video store that had Tai Seng VHS as far as the eye could see.  These VHS covers just do it for me. I would have sex with these VHS sleeves if possible.  Is it possible?  I'll let ya'll know.
HIDDEN DESIRE (1991), THE NEVER ENDING LOVE STORY (1994)
-
HIDDEN DESIRE is a fun little diddy starring our bosomy beloved Veronica Yip Yuk-hing and directed by soft core erotic-meister, Ho Fan.  Also appearing are CAT III sex pot Rena Murakami and CAT III cocksman, the one, the only, Charlie Cho Cha-lee.  THE NEVER ENDING LOVE STORY is a dramatic CAT III potboiler starring Vincent Lam Wai and Michael Wong Man-tak as friends who vie for the affections of nutso hottie.   Are there any other kind?  And, Yes!   It's THAT Michael Wong Man-tak.
 DEVIL SEX LOVE ( 1993) , PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL RAPIST (1994)
-
I've reviewed DEVIL, SEX, LOVE before.  You can find that fun HEREPORTRAIT OF A SERIAL RAPIST is a Danny Lee Sau-yin shot on video Magnum opus that decently jumps on the CAT III train and rides it as far as a shot on video production can go.  Which is not far.  Still, it has enough dirtiness for the fans.  It's mostly available unsubbed, as is this VHS. I also have the DVD and VCD.  Because I'm cool.

 EVIL INSTINCT (1996) , CRAZY EMPEROR (1993)
-
EVIL INSTINCT is a mostly lame adult film starring Carrie Ng Ka-li and 'Mystical Breasts' Diana Pang Dan.  I don't remember much about the film except for a decent Pang Dan shower scene.  Alas, Mystical breasts took her cues from Amy Yip and hides the fun parts.  CRAZY EMPEROR is kinda rare, I suppose.  That being said, I also have the VCD and laser disc.  So, maybe it isn't so rare?  It is a heavily cut adult film that does provide some period piece nakedness.

 THE SPIRITUAL LOVE (1992) , A WILD PARTY (1993)
-
THE SPIRITUAL LOVE is a rather laboring erotic ghost story starring Emily Chu Bo-yee.  Boy, did Emily's film career take a certain nosedive after appearing in ROUGE in 1988.  from A list films like A BETTER TOMORROW and MILLIONAIRE'S EXPRESS to B grade films like this one and ANGEL OR WHORE.  Ain't nothing wrong with that!    A WILD PARTY completes my superfecta.  I now have this CAT III crapfest starring the late great Pauline Chan Bo-lin in all 4 formats.  VHS, DVD, VCD, and laser disc.  Lucky me.

Here's a really fun book for us HK film nerds.  'Film Pilgrimage' shuttles us on a movie tour of the Big Lychee taking snapshots of various film locations. Kinda like what I have been doing HERE and HERE.  The book is not English friendly though and, as you can see in the picture below, is entirely in Chinese.  Thankfully for global fans, all locations are labeled with the film title in English.  Another drawback is that the pictures are kinda small.  Also, there are no comparative pictures.  Meaning there are no pictures from the location as seen in the movie placed up against the actual updated picture of the location.  I'm sure this was most definitely thought about but getting rights to use a picture from each film was most likely too costly. It's easier to yoink pics from films and post in blog form.

Minor flaws aside, this is a worthy book entry for HK film fans/snobs.  There is also a great forward by HKCinemagic webmaster, Thomas Podvin.  Visit Thomas' indispensable site HERE for more info on the book as well as how to order.  It's surefire toilet bowl reading.  And for me, that's the highest rating I can give a book.  That being said, if you ever visit my home, don't touch my HK film books.  They have been 'red flagged' and accompany me to the throne daily.

The Sniping- 奇兵 (1990)

THE SNIPING aka SNIPER (1990)
-
Another 'Coolest movie you have never seen,' Wilson Tong Wai-shing's quick moving gangster-actioner from 1990, THE SNIPING.  I'm very cognizant that my picture taking skills suck ass, (though I believe that is part of the rag tag charm of this crap blog) but at any rate, this is another cool looking poster.  The film is somewhat a rarity in it's availability though I have seen the laserdisc for sale on Ebay for an exorbitant fee.  The Ebay laserdisc, as well as other copies I've seen floating around on the Internet, lack English subs.  A virtual buddy of mine was able to make me a copy with English subs and I'm so very glad he did because this film is a little mentioned goodie.  A real shame.

Chen Kuan-tai and Norman Chu Siu-keung

Alex Man Chi-leung

Eric Tsang Chi-wai

Dig this tight little action sequence from THE SNIPING.   It's quick take action like this that I sorely miss when watching today's HK cinema.  Energetic and dirty violence.  How I do love thee.
-
A quick aside here folks.  I'm sure you are all very aware about the unfortunate and senseless rioting that has occurred in England.  I would like to extend my most heartfelt well wishes to everyone who as been affected by this shameful nonsense.  That being said, a few friends from our Asian Cinema community, TERRACOTTA DISTRIBUTION and THIRD WINDOW FILMS, both based in and around a strike zone of violence in Enfield, have lost major stock due to their warehouse being burned to the ground.  Luckily, no one was hurt.   If you could all take a moment and peruse the movies they have to offer and quite possibly shell out a few sheckles for one...or two...or three DVD's, it would be greatly appreciated.  These independent labels already struggle to bring us the films we so love and now they need an even bigger helping hand.  Also, head on over to the PODCAST ON FIRE NETWORK and give a listen to a mini-podcast about this crap situation.   Thanks everyone.  Enjoy!

Queen's High- 紅粉至尊 (1991)

QUEEN'S HIGH (1991)
-
Great looking poster for the killer 1991 gangland actioner, QUEEN'S HIGH, directed by Chris Lee Kin-sang, best remembered as one of the stuntmen from the infamous POLICE STORY bus stunt-gone-wrong.  Check out the video below to hear Jackie Chan speak about the stunt that left Chris in a coma for 6 1/2 hours.  As for this poster, for me, it displays one of the most iconic stills from heyday HK cinema, Cynthia Khan gripping an Uzi.  The scene, an iconic one as well, has Cynthia's blood spattered bride sprayin' and prayin' up against the bastards that infiltrated her wedding and murdered everyone she held dear.  What's a gal to do!?  VENGANZA!
-
-

I have already decided to have Wei hold an Uzi, a toy one of course, on our wedding day.  I just need a shot of my bride heavily armed.  How awesome would that be?

OK.  Here's one of the most memorable scenes put to HK celluloid.  I know you've seen it before and you love it just as much as I do. Enjoy Cynthia and her Uzi!

Friday Filler

Some filler for your Friday. Check out Ekin 'Noodle' Cheng's lovely locks in my MEAN STREET STORY poster above. Wu Chien-lien seems to think he's so dreamy. I haven't seen MEAN STREET STORY and it's been in my ever growing stack of films I would like to see. But honestly, even though the lovely Chien-lien is in it, I don't think I will ever be getting around to it. And Speaking of Ms. Wu, another review of INTRUDER has popped up in the blogosphere and it's courtesy of my new favorite blog.....ladies and gents, please add to your blog roll.....THE MILKY WAY WONDERLAND!!!!

The blog, still in it's infancy (only a few days old, actually) is the brain child of David Lam, or, Dr. Lamb, if you prefer. The good Dr. has been a great supporter of Bullets Over Chinatown and the This Week In Sleaze podcast and has shared some very kind words with myself and Sleazy K. Please check out his blog as I fully believe he has a unique thing going on over there. His photo headers are damn wonderful and he's quite the artiste. Check out some of his awesome 'doodles' below. i might have to put one on a t-shirt? Maybe a future tattoo???

Wong Jing and his tiny, dangling CAT III symbol

This one is for,
AHND!

Above, Kent Cheng Jak-si gives This Week In Sleaze the thumbs up! This doodle of good ol' Fatty Cheng was sent over to Sleazy K with a few kind words attached. Below, was a doodle sent to me, again, along with some kind words. The one....the only.......the Category III Super-Duperman himself......Mr. Charlie Cho Cha-lee! I fell in love with this drawing upon first site. It just made my day. Heck, it's still making my day a few days later! Great big thanks once again to the very talented David Lam. If you don't check out his blog, don't bother coming back to this one. Be gone! No...seriously. Oh. And about that INTRUDER review......

Charlie is ready to play 'Tune in Tsimshatsui'

I came across this rare Eric Tsang Chi-wai film a few weeks back. It's one I have never heard of. I found it under the title, XIN A LI BA BA. The 'Ali Baba' reference in the title points to something Arabian I suppose? And, indeed, by the look of the film, it appears to be a Aladdinesque comedy/fantasy. A true oddity for sure. I haven't watch the film fully, but as I skipped through the film to see it's quality, I came across this scene and just busted out laughing. It's apropos for the blog. What the heck is Eric doing with those donkey's????

War God (1976).....with a little piece of Ms. Mail Lady on the side

WAR GOD aka CALAMITY (1976)
-

It has been unearthed!!! The much spat about but seldom seen colossal Taiwanese kaiju classic......WAR GOD!!!!! With much thanks to Sleazy K from So Good Reviews and...well... Sleazy K's Video, for tracking this bad boy down and lovingly sharing it with a select few (I was lucky enough to be one of the few) before unleashing it on the public in all of it's downloadable torrent glory. I will not venture a review for this splendid spectacle as we all have been waiting for our good sister, Achilles Girl In Action Land, to plunk down her calamitous write up on this event film. And like the swift falling of the mighty God Kwan's staff, Achillesgirl has crowned us with a doozy of a review. Check it out HERE!!!!!!

To whet your Taiwanese kaiju appetite, above is a brief clip of our beloved God Kwan defending us from those evil big rubber headed aliens! TAKE THAT!!!!! You rubber domed alien person thingies!!!!

-

Switching gears from the enormity of God Kwan, Ms. Mail Lady made another delivery today. My good buddy from the blogosphere, Glenn, over at A Pessimist Is Never Disappointed, is selling off a bunch of his beloved Shaw Brothers films. WTF?, you ask? Fear not. It's all for a good cause. Glenn is planning on uprooting from this shit deal that we here in the states call the 'American Dream', and planning on planting himself squarely and soulfully into our beloved former colony, Hong Kong. To finance his journey to the far east (or west), he is lightening his load for the transplant. Glenn is one of the most generous people I have met through social networking and a genuine good guy. If you are interested in purchasing any of his Shaw Bros. DVD's or VCD's, check out the remaining members on sale right HERE!

Alrighty. So, my big box of win has yielded a ton, well, 27 Celestial Shaw Bros. classics. Check out the pics for the titles. A lot of goodies to wade through. Something about the colorful Celestial packaging really gets me going. I must admit....I opened this package a few hours ago and I'm still kinda moist!

Mo' movies, mo' movies, mo' movies...

Noooo! Not VD. VCD's!!! Though they do make me itch.

One of Glenn's coolest gifts (and he just threw it in for me. I told you he was a good guy!!!) and as he jokingly describes it, " You have the fruits of my labors in hauling ass to the Celestial office," a dang wonderful Celestial Shaw Bros. Film Catalog. Below is a pic from the 'Erotic' section (what else?) of the catalog. If you really dig Shaw Bros. or are just a collector of HK films, hook Glenn up with some of your hard earned coin. I really want to see this great guy in HK! I need a futon to sleep on when i'm in situ!!!!

The Coolest HK Movies You Have Never Seen pt.2- Invasion of the Taiwanese!!!

BIG CIRCLE BLUES (1992)

Often times I knowingly lump Taiwanese productions in with HK productions, especially dealing with the 'golden era' of HK cinema. The reasons being that Taiwan and HK often shared their respective top talents as well as genre cinema stereotypes and often co-produced films together. At times it was difficult to tell what was a Taiwanese production or a HK one, in respect to it's lower budget genre films, as both cinemas were fired up with similar energy and irreverence as well. So, it is only fair of me to count Taiwanese productions in my 'Coolest Movies' series as, for my $, Taiwanese films pack more of a fervent and kinetic off the wall-ness than most HK films. And the proof is where my cheesy little videos come in.

Above is the 1991 Taiwanese actioner, BIG CIRCLE BLUES, starring HK'ers Mark Cheng Ho-nam, Michiko Nishiwaki, Wu Ma, and Taiwanese tough bitch, To Gwai-fa. The films look is cheap, as were the majority of Taiwanese films from this era, but don't let the meager budget fool you. This film, and a whole heckuva lot more films from this era, pack quite an action wallop. Cookie cutter stories and characterizations aside, Taiwanese actioners were more times head and shoulders above their HK counterparts. Believe it!

HEROES IN GAIL aka GANGS POWER (1992)

OK. So, I will admit here that the 1992 gangster actioner HEROES IN GAIL is not a good film. The two copies I have seen of this choppy actioner were questionable at best. The running time is relatively short and appears to be oft edited. I'm unsure if these copies are the most complete ones available, but I don't think a coherent edit would matter? That much being said, HEROES IN GAIL provides some nice action work that thankfully slices into this turgid tale nicely. HK actor Shum Wai, who is most notable for his villainous roles, again body slams his persona into his character by playing a wonderfully glorious bastard. Other HK'ers of note in this mess are bits by Jimmy Lung Fong, the Duke of Dirty-Charlie Cho Cha-lee, and once again, Mark Cheng Ho-nam. The actual title, I believe, should read HEROES IN JAIL, not GAIL. That shit titling only adding to my slight satisfaction with this film.

WOLF OF CHINA SEA aka THE KILLER FROM CHINA (1991)

And finally, WOLF OF CHINA SEA aka THE KILLER FROM CHINA. Again, as with HEROES IN GAIL, this film isn't so hot, but it is definitely cool in parts. Three of HK's finest, circa 1991, star in this gangster blow 'em up. Michael Miu Kiu-wai, Alex Man Chi-leung, and Alex Fong Chung-sun co-mingle with Taiwanese actor Wong Goon-hung, the actual star of this enjoyable action yarn.

As I mentioned earlier, action was the flavor of the day with Taiwanese films from this era. Liberally 'borrowing' plots and pacing from it's better known bigger brother from across the South China Sea, Taiwanese cinema deserves just as much props for their brand of genre excess. Though never really even coming close to scrapping the heels of HK in terms of success, it wasn't for lack of trying. I will most definitely be showing you guys more Taiwanese madness, not only from this beautiful 'golden age' but from some wacky-ass years prior. Some truly cool films that most of you probably have never seen....or heard of, for that matter. Seek these bad boys out! Stay tuned and enjoy.

The Coolest HK Movies You Have Never Seen. Part 1

CRAZY LESBIAN WOODCHOPPER aka TWO GIRLS FACED (1995)

Sporting one of the best alternative titles I have ever seen, CRAZY LESBIAN WOODCHOPPER, is, alas, only a fan-made moniker. The actual film is a slow, slow, CAT III burner from 1995 called TWO GIRLS FACED. The film does get a touch nutty, it does have some lady lovers, and there is an axe or two in the proceedings to ring true it's silly aka title. Clocking in at just under 80 minutes, incorporating HK type mayhem (as you can see in the vid above), and adding some bump and grind, TWO GIRLS FACED is instantly fan friendly. The only notable faces in this fun mess are Alvina Kong Yan-yin and the always nasty delight, William Ho Ka-kui.

NOBODY'S HERO (1989)

NOBODY'S HERO is Hong Kong's most direct answer to Scorcese's TAXI DRIVER. Possessing similar stories and desperate performances by the respective leads, NOBODY'S HERO proves that a hero ain't nuttin' but a sandwich. NOBODY'S HERO is at times sweet and playful, eventually careening out of control, before spiraling downward into one of the most shocking and effective ultra violence climaxes put to HK celluloid. A true visceral experience and not only the coolest but one of the BEST HK films you have never seen. Liu Wai-hung, who is more of a comedic presence in films, is totally transformed by films end into a sympathetic vigilante. I also posted this on my FB page, this video reminding me of a bit of Travis Bickle dialogue from Taxi Driver, "Listen, you f**kers, you screwheads. Here is a man who would not take it anymore. A man who stood up against the scum, the c**ts, the dogs, the filth, the shit. Here is a man who stood up." Also look for a vicious performance by Sunny Fang Kang. What a scumbag!

WHORE AND POLICEWOMAN (1993)

I have mentioned this beautiful gem a few times before, once giving you guys a gander at my poster and again blabbering and stuttering my way through a review on the first episode of This Week in Sleaze. Another wonderful title is not wasted as kick-buns HK copper Michicko Nishiwaki and happy hooker Julia Cheng Yim-lai befriend each other and fight their way through baddie henchmen in order to uncover some dirty deeds done by villain, Charlie Cho Cha-lee. It's a jumpy CAT III action romp that is a touch rare and will scratch you right where you itch. Though I'm really not sure where you guys are itchin'? But Charlie Cho will gladly rub some lotion on your troubled area for you. He really cares.

-

I have a bunch of hidden HK gems that I'm hoping to post here in this short video form. Keeping it simple and stupid. Quick, easy....and fun! Some you may have seen or just heard of and some you might have no clue about? These will be the COOLEST HK movies you have never seen. Promise.

Leslie Cheung: In Memoriam

R.I.P Gor Gor (Sept.12, 1956- April 1, 2003)

-

The above scene in Cheung's 2000 film, DOUBLE TAP, is one of my favorite HK cinema scenes of all time. It is the first scene that immediately springs to mind when someone mentions Cheung's name. I truly believe his emotions in this scene are actual and not acting. The emotions are palpable and really shook me upon first seeing the film years ago.

-

Here is a cheesy little review I did for cityonfire.com back in 2001 when I first saw the film. It's one of my earliest reviews and it shows:

Atmosphere plays heavily in this creepy psychological/horror/gun flick. Sure the characters aren't well defined but they rarely are in HK cinema. The mood of the film, which plays very downbeat, adds to the anguish of Leslie Cheung's character. His portrayal of a mentally disturbed 'gun-king' is very intense. Scenes of his attempts at suicide singe your memory and are still there days later. Double Tap's Leslie Cheung rivals Lau Ching-Wan's slightly touched character in Ringo Lam's 'The Victim". Another psychological character study that switches off the brain of it's lead and a film with an equally unsettling atmosphere. Double Tap, warts and all, is definitely worth a look, and to it's detractors, try it again.

It's a crap review but it follows my rules: KISS. Keep It Simple, Stupid. Because that is what I am. Simple and stupid. =)

Classic Hong Kong Cinema Lobby Cards....NSFW =)

MURDER ON THE WEDDING NIGHT (1977)
-
Ohhhhhhh! Boobies! Though this blog is based upon CAT III films and other tales of ribaldry, this is the actual first post to contain a little nudity. I mostly try to beat around the bush (or, 'beat the bush' as HK film subtitles usually say) in regards to nudity, only alluding to scenes of nekkid people. But, while seeking assistance from a few friends with researching the earliest scenes of HK erotica for a future podcast, a friend of mine and Shaw Bros. enthusiast (nerd), K.W. hooked me up with a few old school lobby cards from his collection while on his search. And he scored nicely. I had a reservation or two about putting these up because of the nudity (Me reserved? Yes, actually. On occasion.) but thought that these images were to good to pass up sharing. Above, is Law Chun's 1977 adult erotic drama MURDER ON THE WEDDING NIGHT. I have not seen it, or even heard of it before K.W. sent it along. Enjoy the rest of the smutty fun finds below.

HE WHO NEVER DIES (1979)
-
As K.W. put it, Danny Lee pimpin' in HE WHO NEVER DIES, from INFRAMAN director, Hua Shan.

CAVE OF THE SILKEN WEB (1967)
-

Angie Yu Chien is nestled snug in notorious Shaw Bros. director Ho Meng-hua's, CAVE OF THE SILKEN WEB.

THE KUNG FU MONKS (1975)
-
Also known as, THE MONK, Dean Shek-tin wrote and directed this slightly erotic martial arts picture combining nudity and kung-fu. Above, Fung Hak-on sexes a comely young maiden. And it's only rated CAT II?!

AN AMOROUS WOMAN OF TANG DYNASTY (1984)
-
I first saw this film a few months back while going through a Shaw Bros. erotica phase and was so glad that I did. Eddie Fong Ling-ching's 1984 epic, AN AMOROUS WOMAN OF TANG DYNASTY, has yet to leave my memory. I have only seen the truncated version but I am on the lookout for the full copy. The scene in the lobby card above is my absolute favorite from the film where Alex Man Chi-leung comes to rescue Pat Ha Man-jik from a few bastard swordsmen. See this film!

AN AMOROUS WOMAN OF TANG DYNASTY (1984)
-

LOST SOULS (1980)
-

Surely most noted for the films MEN BEHIND THE SUN in 1988 and a sequel of sorts, BLACK SUN: THE NANKING MASSACRE, in 1995, director Mau Dui-fai aka T.F Mous, was a Shaw Bros. genre director in the late 70's and early 80's. He was known to push the envelope with naughty and dangerous exploitation elements, more times than not, peppering the proceedings with some social commentary. The lobby cards above and below, from the 1980 roughie, LOST SOULS, is one such example. The film reels off in the extreme with a ton of nudity and torture-porn violence. It's a tough watch for most, even for me. Dui-fai, as sensationalistic as his celluloid exploits may seem, his images are rooted in realism. Which leads to us squirming in our seats upon seeing his films.

LOST SOULS (1980)
-
Big, big thanks to K.W. for the lobby cards. Keep 'em coming! For more of K.W.'s lobby cards, check out the absolutely great Facebook page, Past Divas of Hong Kong Cinema, where K-dub share his collection and his knowledge of all things old school HK cinema. You'll also find a ton of other great images from HK cinemas past. To my big brutha K.W.! The richest man in town!

This Week In Sleaze episode 2! Dr. Lamb!

This Week In Sleaze episode 2 is now online!!!!
Click ME!
-
Hey everybody! This Week In Sleaze episode 2 is up and runnin'! Sleazy K and I shoot a 2 1/2 hour juicy nugget into your waxy ears. This week we discuss at length some more CAT III goodness as the 1992 genre classic DR. LAMB is dissected, it's mid 80's predecessor HONG KONG BUTCHER is unearthed and chopped to bits, and we end on a rape and murder spree with our Last Movies Watched segment. K spits and foams about an IFD revenge thriller DEADLY DARLING as I gleefully spin about HK smut obscurity, THE RAPING MURDERER. Download this eventual crust stain right NOW!

DR. LAMB (1992)
-

In conjunction with the podcast release, since we spew about DR. LAMB and other Billy Tang Hin-sing flicks, I figured I would throw ya'll a few poster images from a few of my favorite Tang films. The DR. LAMB poster above I bought many moons ago and already in awfully damaged condition. And even this mangled version wasn't so cheap. It came folded, as most HK posters do, and just ravaged by use. It is a poster I hold dear, though, and will hopefully eventually upgrade and then frame.

Hong Kong Butcher

The Jars Murderer

Rainy Nights Killer

Below is another dogged poster from my collection and of one of my all time favorite HK films, STREET OF FURY. STREET OF FURY is Tang's semi tongue in cheek take on the 'Goo Wat Jai' or YOUNG AND DANGEROUS genre. Released in 1996, the same year as the first 3 Y&D films, STREET OF FURY is just as violent, vibrant, funny, sharp, and edgy as the Y&D films but sadly lost in the muddle. It scrapes and nicks the CAT III genre without taking it into racy extremes. Well, not TOOOO racy.

STREET OF FURY (1996)

It kinda pisses me off a bit that these posters weren't kept in better condition before I purchased them. But as a 'collector' of sorts and relegated to a tiny apartment, I can definitely see how difficult it is to sustain posters in pristine condition. I am much better off with these crumpled works of art than without them, though. I just love 'em so!

-
Below is a short scene and one of the most memorable ones from Tang's STREET OF FURY. Poor Teresa Mak Ga-kei. I fell in love with her while watching this movie. Unfortunately her career hasn't panned out as I had hoped? Here, you can see how Tang pushes the envelope into CAT III-lite territory as Teresa gets brutalized by some dirty triads. One of my favorite scenes of all-time. Enjoy!

Below is another wonderful scene from STREET OF FURY. A young triad chopper wielding punk, small potato rumble in the streets of HK. Eat your heart out YOUNG AND DANGEROUS!

Click HERE to track back and see the 2 posters I have for my favorite Billy Tang Hin-sing film and one of my top 5 HK films of...yes....all time, RUN AND KILL. Now, git! Go and download This Week In Sleaze episode 2. Light a few scented candles. Pour yourself into a hot bubble bath. Squeeze a dollop of your favorite store brand body wash into your palm. And go down below. Enjoy yourself tonight!

HK junk, dribs and drabs....

Another filler post here as I'm leading up to something pretty cool in the next week or so. Stay tuned! Anyway, this past Thursday Wei and I celebrated Valentine's Day a bit early. Dinner at The Melting Pot and gifts, gifts, gifts! I would have much preferred to eat at Taco Bell but it's not always about what I want. Right?! But, the gifts were damn excellent! Wei bought me the above laserdiscs, WHORES FROM THE NORTH and the kinda rare ANGEL HUNTER. I have been waiting to see ANGEL HUNTER since I first read a review of the film at the outset of my HK movie watching days. Friday morning I dove straight in. And it did not disappoint. The film is stellar. Stylish and wild with an eerie feel throughout. It's populated by all-stars, Anthony Wong Chau-sang, Carrie Ng Ka-lai, Ng Man-tat, Vivian Chow Wai-man and Lau Ching-wan. Admittedly, most of the players appeared during their 'before they were stars' years but this is no skeleton-in-a-closet flick. It supposedly sat on the shelf for a year or two before being released in 1991. I really can't see why? Perhaps the subject matter, concerning religion, was a bit too taboo? Or maybe they felt the subject wouldn't scratch where film goers itched? The film isn't chock full of flavor of the day action scenes but a slow burn of creepy drama, a few out of place comedy bits, and absolutely fantastic performances. And for the action hounds, the finale is a stud, filled out by Yuen Bun and Yuen Kwai. My favorite write up of the film is a great quickie review over at HKMDB which states: "Satanic Cult recruits schoolgirls, and then bad things happen to them. Police decide to investigate." While not 100% accurate (police really aren't in on the mix), this is the type of review that I love to read. Short and sweet. If I were ever to do my own website or write a book on CAT III film reviews, that is how a review would go. I would only add that the film runs about 99 minutes and there is a smattering of nakedness. Brief synopsis, running time, and raunchy content. Now the review is complete. Perfecto.

It seems like it's been forever since I posted anything from my poster collection. Remember when posters where an integral part of this blog? I have so many more to show. Maybe I will get back to my roots this year? We'll see? This poster is in response to a blog buddy of mine, A Hero Never Dies. He showed me his so now I have to show him mine. Er, rather he showed me his HARD BOILED UK Quad poster so I am showing him my CITY ON FIRE UK Quad poster. I think mine is longer? But Wei tells me it's the width that counts. Is that true?

A few videos here for you to enjoy. Up top is the wet and wild scuba girls-with-guns action romp, LUNATIC FROG WOMEN aka VIRGIN COMMANDOS. The film features the legendary Cheng Pe-pei in an odd starring turn. Ms. Cheng must have needed to pay the rent that month?

A quick clip here from my absolute favorite film from 2010, Pang Ho-cheung's DREAM HOME. Josie Ho Chiu-yee's performance is fantastic and award worthy. This clip is kinda SFW, meaning just a heck of a lot of violence and no naked bits. The film has a ton of both. Such a goodie. Click HERE to relive my DREAM HOME journey and hear me make an ass out of myself as I ask Pang Ho-cheung a question at a screening of DREAM HOME at last years Tribeca Film Festival. Enjoy the clip and remember to check back, hopefully, this coming week. Some fun stuff ahead at Bullets Over Chinatown.

GUNG HAY FAT CHOI! SAN NIN FAAI LOK! Or, if you prefer, GONG XI FA CAI! XIN NIAN KUAI LE!

Happy Chinese New Year of the Wabbit to all of my readers! Just a quick New Year's post so I can get back to stuffing my fat face with homemade New Year's food. And it's another foodie-douche post! Last night I hung out with Wei's family for New Year's Eve dinner and below are pics of the delicious spread. The pics came out kinda crap as I used my Blackberry and really wasn't much interested in taking pics as I was in sticking my pudgy mug into each and every dish. Above, in lieu of a hong bao, Wei gave me this awesome unsubtitled, shot-on-video, CAT III laserdisc. THE STORY OF A GIGOLO. Whaddaya say about a girl like that?

We sat at the kiddies table....in the foyer! It's because I'm white!

Tea Eggs. A personal favorite.

Salty Marinated Pork

Bean Sprout and Vegetable Stir-Fry

Fried Gluten

Vegetable Bean Curd Wrap

A new homemade masterpiece from Wei's mother. Meatballs on the Half Shell. Meatball and oyster. Delicious!

Jellyfish. Another personal favorite.

Pearl Rice Balls. Glutinous rice surrounds a pork meatball filling. Aces!

Pearl Rice Ball. Up close.

My first plate

Eight Treasures Rice

And this was just round one! Round two is Saturday evening when a handful of Wei's cousins come home from their respective $100,000 a year universities (all stereotypical Asian nerds
. WTF is AP Bio? haha) and converge on Wei's parents home to chow down, and engage in more Asian stereotypes by throwing some dice and then playing Mahjong until whenever?! It should be fun?! I'm packing some Tupperware for leftovers, hooking on my super heavy duty under wire manziere, and wearing spandex. And then it's back over on Sunday for the Super Bowl. Come Monday I'll be hitting up JC Penney's husky ladies section for new bras. Bring on the food!

A VERY HAPPY, HEALTHY, AND PROSPEROUS LUNAR NEW YEAR OF THE RABBIT TO ALL OF MY FRIENDS AND READERS FROM BULLETS OVER CHINATOWN!
